ITV INDUSTRY

OWNERSHIP- THE WAY IN WHICH THE BUSINESS PART OF A TV COMPANY IS RUN

FUNDING- THE SOURCES A MEDIA COMPANY USES TO GET MONEYY FOR PRODUCING THEIR SHOWS

REGULATION- THE SETTING AND ENFORCING OF RULES

BROADCASTING IN 1960'S

BBC BEGAN IN 1956👵👴

ITV BEGAN IN 1955 as a direct competition for BBC 👿

  • during mid 1960's we only had 3 channels
  • televisions were small ðŸ“º
  • expensive 💰
  • only available black and white♡
  • three channels 3
  • only on certain times of day🕑
  • couldn't flick to find something you like
  • when nothing was on cast national anthem payed continuously
  • channel surfing didn't exist 📺
This means in 1960's television wasn't an everyday household necessity it was uncommon, as it was new they were expensive so many wouldn't own one but it would be exciting for people when there was something broadcasting.

BBC had complete monopoly (exclusive control) over the TV industry this means that the BBC's unique broadcaster had complete ownership over the industry and therefore faced not as much competition

When ITV began, it was the first time products were advertised and quickly grew in popularity

FUNDING

ITV was a network of television companies who competed with each other to provide programmes for the channel the production company behind the Avengers was ABC., but it was broadcast on ITV

ITV didn't create all sources itv didn't create avengers only broadcast

Their first source of income came from advertising revenue resulted in high production values than BBC (sound quality ECT, better quality than BBC)

HOWEVER THEY HAD TO STICK TO THE RULES OUTLINED BY THE INDEPENDENT TELEVISION AUTHORITY WHO SUPERVISED THE CREATED OF ITV THE OUTCOME OF THIS WAS THAT ITV HAD TO OFFER AUDIENCES A RANGE OF PROGRAMMES

ITV FUNDING

ITV FUNDED IN 3 WAYS

  • Advertisment - companies pay lots of money to ave their advert slot
  • product placement- companies products are put in shows and made clear
  • sponsorship- when a company would sponser a show
Avengers was sold to many overseas countries America gave £2 million pound for the production of the 4th series (my set text)which gave it high production values

(£56,000 per episode for 4th series)

Regulation

Due to the 1960's there was not regulation like their was today

In 1964 watershed was produced

ITV opened channel at 4:20 with daytime soap, then children show's and then adult programmes followed that. The avengers was broadcast at 9pm as it had mature theme. watershed allowed itv to ave more adult programming. itv hut down at midnight as everyone in bed

Scheduling and Funding

Avengers was scheduled 9:05 and was on a Saturday so it was prime time and prime day for more audiences . it attracted 7 million homes appeared in-top 10 television programmes.

Viewers ad to get up and turn channel no remote resulted to more people sticking on channel so more viewers for Avengers.
